Latest Meeting Recap
Laurie & Bill's Recap of our March 12th meeting
Greetings! Our meeting, starting at 5:30 with more time for chatting and socializing, was a success! Laurie has received feedback that the mood was lighter, and there were lots of connecting and networking. We also plan to share the database beyond the usual list of email names so you can reach each other outside of the club.
The meeting kicked off at 6:00 with the standard question asking if there were any remaining comments about the previous month’s movie, “The Whale”. It was noted that it was not even nominated last year for “Best Makeup”. This was surprising when you considered the work that went into transforming Brandon Frasier for the role.
Bill announced the winners of our first ever Oscar contest, with 38% of our members participating. Bob M. and Laurie tied for 3rd with 7 of 10 correct picks. Sally grabbed 2nd with 8 correct picks. Bill managed to get top honors with 9 correct picks. Bill will receive a gift certificate for two to the Cinema Art Theater! Congratulations 🎈! We hope to have more participation next year!
For the April meeting, per club guidelines, we will discuss the Oscars “Best Picture” winner, “Anora”. Since Bill will be out of town, we need a leader for this discussion. If no one steps forward to lead, Laurie asks that ALL of us come prepared with various information/ thoughts about the movie and we will all participate in the talk, as usual. This was an interesting movie, to say the least. The meeting date is 4/1/25. Social time starts at 5:30 PM and the meeting starts at 6:00 PM. "Anora" is playing at Cinema Art, starting this week.
Our May meeting is on May 6, and as discussed previously, we will use our funds to rent the small (JEMS) theatre at the Cinema Art Theater (CAT), on Dartmouth behind Wawa. We will pay homage to Gene Hackman, a formidable actor. We discussed a variety of his films. Bill presented a long list of suggested movies, but we could not reach a consensus! So, Bill will send out a poll, and we will vote on which movie to watch in May. PLEASE VOTE! The selections are as follows:
Runaway Jury
Mississippi Burning
Postcards from the Edge ( * Note we have already done two Meryl Streep movies)
The Firm
Moving on, Kathleen led the discussion on “One Life”. The movie is the true story about Nicky Winston’s determination to help hundreds of predominantly Jewish children in German-occupied Czechoslovakia to hide and flee in 1938–39, just before the beginning of World War II. The group found the film to be compelling and moving. To witness Nicky's humanitarian spirit, and how he worked tirelessly with his mother, an indomitable force herself, to find homes and the proper paperwork for all these children was truly inspiring. Some research showed that £50 in 1938 is equivalent to about £4,300 today. This is a huge amount of money to raise in wartime.
We were impressed with how humble Winston was in his actions and how he compartmentalized his actions against moving forward with his life as a financial broker, after the last train did not make it out of Europe. He finally presented his scrapbook and took recognition for his work, was surrounded by the many children he had saved. It was truly rewarding work. But he didn’t want credit. He just cared for the children, and knew if they remained in Europe, that their fate was not good. It was a wonderful choice to discuss.
We need a leader and film for the June meeting. We hope to be outside at George H.P. Smith Park for the meeting, as the summer weather starts. A reminder to always check the website and emails in case a sudden storm arrives. We will use the Wheelhouse as a backup. Photos of the pavilion location and directions are on the website.
Lastly, the Jewish film festival is April 23-27 at the CAT. Please check the Rehoboth Film Society website (click here). There is always a great selection of films!
Have a great couple of weeks!
